James will discuss the law in the area, specifically the Hague Convention, of which the UK is a member. By going through the legal requirements, James will discuss several key cases, many of which he was involved in himself.

This guest lecture is part of the Modern Challenges in Family Law module (LA396), but is open for all Law students to attend. It will be of interest to those studying (and/or wishing to pursue a career in) family law. In essence, what these proposals seek to do is to manufacture the substrate that governance has always presupposed with the promise to hold in place the body on which the law is set to rest. This paper reads that promise through Bernard Stiegler’s idea of exosomatisation, the externalisation of vital functions into technical organs, and argues that such interventions also externalise normativity. For instance, The freeze-thaw cycle of Arctic sea ice already performs normative work of certain kind. It times passage, distributes access, sets thresholds into space before the law, or rather before legal temporalities, can exist. When autonomous technologies take over that cycle, the normative ability migrates with them, and the scientific and technical knowledge about how much ice there ought to be, where, and for whom, becomes inscribed into infrastructure that executes it continuously, without deliberation and without a subject.

This paper argues that this a conceptual mistake to think of geoengineering governance, and all its ramifications, as being about the legal regulation of a new technology. Rather, it is more effective to understand it a contest over where normativity resides and whether autonomy, read as auto-nomos, can be recreated artificiality where the nomos derives not from a subject but by a made thing. The instinct at this point is often to work against the artifice, as if an autonomous nature had been surrendered to machines. In that respect, the paper also reads exosomatisation through the additional theoretical lens of Xenofeminism to suggest that nothing about autonomy was ever natural. The planet to which law would defer is already an object in which artificiality is the condition of planetary governance. To defend a self-regulating earth system against its artificial double is potentially the most counter-productive naturalising move.

Research PGR Law School Event Staff CCLS Mon, 28 Sep 2026 15:40:18 GMT Law Marketing Resource 8ac672c7a08038cf01a080d6bae0018d 19/11 2pm-3pm: PGR Coffee Morning: Meeting the Doctoral College Staff /fac/soc/law/events/?calendarItem=8ac672c4a19be4cc01a19c0987f51ec5
When: 14:00 - 15:00, Thu, 19 Nov '26

Where: S2.09

Join us for an informal session with staff from the Doctoral College. AI Agents, and humans-in-or-out-of-the-loop'

Abstract: 'As AI dominates policy and legal debates, the focus is increasingly turning to AI Agents, i.e., applications built on AI that can automate actions typically undertaken by humans. Unlike robotic automation, which mostly replaced or supplemented mechanical actions, AI agents seek to replace humans in important decision-making processes. Consumer-focused AI agents are a key example: several of these have started to appear (e.g., Muse), but early reports suggest that they suffer from reliability problems. The basic idea of AI agents seems attractive, but it raises questions as to what exactly the implications would be for human consumers to step back from taking decisions themselves that can affect their economic interests and privacy. This paper focuses on the implications of taking human consumers out of the decision-making loop and considers the implications for consumer law, as well as for human consumers who wish to remain in the loop. Although the focus is on consumer law, the issues discussed are of wider relevance to AI-driven automation'

Research PGR Law School Event Staff Mon, 05 Oct 2026 14:07:21 GMT Law Marketing Resource 8ac672c7a10bc04901a10c61052f099a 30/11 4:30pm-5:30pm: Supervisor Development Programme: Trauma informed Supervision /services/dc/supervision/events/
When: 16:30 - 17:30, Mon, 30 Nov '26

Delivered by Psychologist and Warwick 91影视破解版, this session will equip you to best support your PGR when they are researching sensitive subject areas.

Research Staff Mon, 26 Oct 2026 10:54:38 GMT Law Marketing Resource 8ac672c5a15746b001a177d918bf05c9 02/12 12:30pm-2pm: T1 WK9 - Law School Lunchtime Research Seminar - Wednesday 2 December 2026 /fac/soc/law/events/?calendarItem=8ac672c4a0803c2a01a080e176bd01c8
When: 12:30 - 14:00, Wed, 02 Dec '26

Where: S2.09 / S2.12

Speaker: Tara Mulqueen, 91影视破解版 Law School

Chair: Daniel Matthews, 91影视破解版 Law School

Title: 'Legal Consciousness, Alienation and the Desire for Law'

Abstract: 'Drawing on recent qualitative research that highlighted a pervasive sense of alienation from law and rights, this paper will contend with some implicit normative tendencies in the study of legal consciousness, particularly a persistent, if often latent desire for law that will be described as a form of “cruel optimism” (Lauren Berlant). While Ewick and Silbey emphasize the importance of marginality in generating counterhegemonic resistance, it is also the most marginalised whose legal consciousness is often construed as being in need of shaping or improvement, to reconcile them to the utility, if not the wider benefit, of law and rights. This tendency is in part a consequence of what Silbey described as a ‘domestication’ of legal consciousness, by which it was reduced to awareness and instrumentalised for policy purposes. However, this paper will return to some of the fundamental premises of Ewick and Silbey’s account of legality’s hegemonic power -- the relationship between structure and agency, alongside wider conceptions of consciousness – to argue they downplay the role of solidarity and multiplicity in generating the possibility of resistance. The paper will turn to Mari Matsuda’s conception of ‘multiple consciousness’ to explore how to take marginalised narratives seriously and the importance of doing so in the context of the decline of the welfare state and growth of far-right movements'

Research PGR Law School Event Staff Wed, 07 Oct 2026 08:21:09 GMT Law Marketing Resource 8ac672c4a0803c2a01a080e176bd01c9 09/12 11am-12pm: Supervisor Development Programme: Giving Feedback on your PGRs writing /services/dc/supervision/events/
When: 11:00 - 12:00, Wed, 09 Dec '26

What challenges do you face when trying to give feedback to your PGRs? Legality cannot be understood only in terms of the rules, principles and doctrinal propositions through which law describes itself. Law must also become perceptible and interpretable through the conditions in which people encounter it. But what does that encounter involve? And what enables us to recognise it as an encounter with law? What are the perceptual conditions through which legality becomes available to consciousness, and what part is played by the environments in which those encounters occur? What is it about a courtroom that makes it recognisable as a court, and what happens to that encounter when its ordinary conditions of presence are changed?

My research into the architecture of justice began a long time ago but was forced to evolve rapidly with the practical problem of how to design a courtroom in which jury trials could continue during the Covid-19 pandemic. Working with judges and lawyers on the Nightingale Courts exposed assumptions about courtroom experience that had rarely needed to be articulated. The process of re-designing the Crown Court provided a way of investigating what makes a court recognisable as a place of law, and to what aspects of that place we can attribute that sense of justice or at least of having ones’ day in court. The design process of a new trial court model revealed how much legal practice depends on things that are rarely articulated as legal knowledge: where people are positioned, what they can see and hear, how they move and communicate, and how the relationships between them are materially organised. I want to suggest that these are not simply the surroundings in which law happens. They are among the conditions through which legal authority becomes perceptible and recognisable. My interest, then, is not only in what law says or what legal institutions decide, but in how law becomes present to those who encounter it — and what this might tell us about legal consciousness, the rule of law and the rapidly changing conditions of justice. As digitalisation changes the nature of presence at the legal interface. To understand the consequences of this it surely helps to know more about how the artefacts and aesthetics of legal spaces work with human presence to generate a dynamic through which legal process and authority are perceived and understood. I suggest that rather than merely removing materiality from legal experience, digital participation transforms the material, spatial and sensory conditions through which law becomes perceptible. The question is how these changes affect the interpretative resources through which participants recognise one another, engage with legal process and experience its authority.

Research PGR Law School Event Staff Fri, 06 Nov 2026 17:04:01 GMT Law Marketing Resource 8ac672c7a08038cf01a080ec7c9e01cc 27/01 12:30pm-2pm: T2 WK3 - Law School Lunchtime Research Seminar - Wednesday 27 January 2027 /fac/soc/law/events/?calendarItem=8ac672c7a08038cf01a080ddfe8e01ac
When: 12:30 - 14:00, Wed, 27 Jan '27

Where: S2.09 / S2.12

Guest Speaker: Judith Bueno De Mesquita, University of Essex Law School

Chair: Daniel Matthews, 91影视破解版 Law School

Title & Abstract: TBC

Research PGR Law School Event Staff CGHL Fri, 06 Nov 2026 17:11:42 GMT Law Marketing Resource 8ac672c6a0e5f88201a0e8ae3d75333e 11/02 5pm-7pm: One Essex Court: Pupillage Interview Workshop https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/e466edb4-aa90-4092-af7e-404a06296f1b@ba756ff4-df04-40d5-9b50-f93052fd6202?source=copyLinkLegacyShareLinkDialog
When: 17:00 - 19:00, Thu, 11 Feb '27

Where: Online

Our very popular Pupillage Interview Workshop focuses on how to prepare for and perform in pupillage interviews.
