While the protection of seas and oceans is increasin gly recognised in climate and biodiversity regimes\, it remains the leas t funded global environmental goal. Blue bonds have emerged to channel p rivate finance toward marine and freshwater protection\, beginning with Seychelles’ 2018 issuance. This project critically assesses whether diff erent blue bond modalities align with international environmental and hu man rights law. The research draws on doctrinal analysis and case studie s in the Seychelles\, Belize\, and the Nordic-Baltic region. It adopts a socio-legal perspective informed by critical legal theory and political ecology. Some research findings that will be shared in this seminar inc lude how selected blue bonds fail adequate demonstration of environmenta l additionality and generate tensions with common but differentiated res ponsibilities and respective capabilities principle. About the Speaker: Arınç Onat Kılıç is a doctoral researcher and teaching assistant at the Faculty of Law at the University of Antwerp (Belgium). It is for many also a tempting career path\, leading to potentially truly global p ractice of law. But it is also seen as harder to move into and\, for tho se inside\, faced with multiple challenges that will shape its future. H ow does one become an arbitration practitioner in the first place\, and then perhaps an arbitrator? What is the future of this global dispute re solution mechanism in a world that might become less global? And what do es technology - with AI leading the pack - might mean for the future of arbitration? To discuss these and other interesting questions\, we are h onoured to be joined by two leading practitioners\, Kim Franklin KC (War wick Law alumna) of Crown Office Chambers and Ben Giaretta CArb FCIArb o f Newmans Row. With both sharing their ample experience in fields rangin g from sports\, over construction and shipping\, to energy and technolog y\, we look forward to shedding light and perspective on arbitration bot h today and tomorrow.
